Makerspaces Opening Hours S2, 2018

Currently Engineering students can access two Makerspaces at UNSW. One in MME Willis Annex (J18) and one at the MCIC Hilmer Building (E10).

Both of these spaces have a range of tools and equipment and friendly staff to help you with your projects.

 

Makerspace Opening Times

During session, these Makerspaces are open Monday to Friday 10am – 8pm and Saturdays 10am-6pm.

When group inductions are scheduled, access in the makerspace may be reduced as machines and equipment will be in use.

 

How to Access the Makerspace

The first and most crucial step is to complete a general Makerspace Safety Induction.

You will need to:

  • Read a safe work procedure
  • Complete a quiz
  • Attend a 3 hour practical activity and learn to make our induction product – a handy laptop stand!
  • Once you have completed the practical it enables you to work in BOTH spaces – you only need to do ONE induction at EITHER MCIC or Willis Annex.

This induction is a ground up introduction to using and understanding equipment, tools, and methodologies. You will learn how to safely and effectively use hand and power tools including drill presses, bandsaws, jig saws, sanders and various hand tools.

There is also other equipment that we can work with you to learn through additional training such as laser cutters, 3D printers and CNC machines.

Makerspace Rules

  • You MUST complete a Makerspace Safety Induction before entering the Makerspaces. Staff will check your training when you access the workshop. 
  • Closed shoes are mandatory in the Makerspace
  • Safety glasses are mandatory in the Makerspace
  • Absolutely no alcohol or drugs can be brought into the Makerspace. Non-alcoholic drinks are allowed in sealable bottles. Use of tools and machinery is forbidden to those under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Food is not allowed in the Makerspace.
  • Always help others not as knowledgeable as yourself. And if you are not sure how to use a tool or machine, please ask first. Maker Mentors are on staff and able to assist you.
  • We are not a service provider, asking staff to make something for you for free or even paid will not go down well. Embrace the principles of the maker movement, skill up and do it yourself or do it with others.
  • Leave No Trace! After using the space, you are expected to clean up your workspace.
